Would it be better if they wouldn't? I think not, this way certain quality things find their way in Linux and raise the bar for everyone, including M$.
Linux is like a recycle bin for the big UNIX vendors. :) This way certain things developed on UNIX can survive through Linux, even though the systems per se are hardly ever used anymore (think xfs and Irix, AdvFS and Tru64 etc.).
