This would make an awesome learning tool for schools and such. Make it into some kind of appliance, add a bunch of examples, problems, tests and such and it can teach kids collaborative debugging and the basics of programming.

If I had to guess it's running User Mode Linux (or some similar jail) and ptrace (or some similar systrace or syscall tracer).

I poked a bit with perl "Config" (eg: perl -V) and it looks like they're running Gentoo.. all accounts seem to be on the same instance (nobody). So it's most likely a jail.

Firefox Firebug vs. Internet Explorer 8 Developer Tools

Looks like IE 8 has a pretty neat feature called "Developer Tools". It's _very_ similar to Firebug:



Being able to import Firefox and Opera settings and adding quite a few of their features makes IE 8 pretty interesting.

When updating Flash it sometimes leaves some files behind you cannot delete, even though there is no lock on the file (handle, unlocker, whatever).

You need to unregister it using regsvr32:

regsvr32 "C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\Macromed\Flash\Flash10a.ocx" /u

Now you can update your Flash...

Configure Firefox to perform DNS lookups via proxy

If you've configured a proxy in Firefox it still may leak DNS requests. Type in:

about:config

in the address bar, and look for:

network.proxy.socks_remote_dns

Download HQ MP4 or FLV movies from youtube

Just add the following without the quotes after the youtube film URL and use something like FlashGot (or grab the full URL with Firebug) to download it:

"&fmt=18" for HQ MP4 format
or
"&fmt=6" for HQ FLV format.

The "Flash Video Resources Downloader" Firefox addon seems to get this right and is able to download FLV, HQ FLV and HQ MP4 format movies from Youtube and can also handle similar sites. The downside is reliance on a web hosted php script (it means visiting this site every time you want to download something to grab the URL).

Bitlbee - Yahoo and IM console client on AIX

Bitlbee supports XMPP/Jabber (including Google Talk), MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, AIM and ICQ and creates a localhost IRC server you can connect to with say EMACS ERC irc client. Great for the whole ssh -> screen -> EMACS -> ERC deal.

It's quite nice for consolidating all your communication inside of Emacs (IRC via ERC, mail and news via GNUS, IM via bitlbee), etc.

Luckily, Bitlbee compiles out of the box on AIX, and you don't even need root permissions to use it.

Simply download it and compile it with say gcc:

% ./configure --ssl=openssl
% gmake
% ./bitlbee -D -n -v -i 127.0.0.1 -p 12345 -c ./bitlbee.conf

Adding more speeddial boxes to Opera.

By default, Opera uses a 3x3 grid for the speeddial. You can change this to whatever you want by editing the speeddial.ini file.

Open a new opera tab and type in opera:config and search for "speeddial" in the Quick Find bar.

You now have the location of speeddial.ini from User Prefs - Speed Dial File. Edit this file.

Make sure you close Opera, and edit this file.

Add the following lines to the top of the speeddial.ini file:

Columns=4

This should give you a solid 16 speeddial boxes.

Making VMware Console work with Firefox 3.0.1

If you're running VMware Server 2 and require the console plugin to work with Firefox, you can use this trick to make it work once you update to Mozilla Firefox 3.0.1:

Just edit the VMware Console plugin install.rdf and change the:

3.0.0.*

to

3.0.*
or
3.0.1.*

and restart Firefox. Now update Firefox and all should work fine.

The install.rdf should be located in the plugin folder (~/.mozilla or similar on UNIX and Document and Settings or User/username/Application Data on Windows. Example:

Just search for VMwareVMRC.

Sun announced intentions to release SunWebServer under BSD license

Sun will opensource part of their web stack under a BSD license.

"Sun announced that it is open sourcing the core components of the Sun Java(TM) System Web Server 7.0 and Sun Java(TM) System Web Proxy technologies under a BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution) license in the Web Stack sub-project of the OpenSolaris community. International High IQ Society

TA3 is the most difficult standardized IQ test provided by the International High IQ Society. It's geared for accurate higher IQ levels, rather than 90-110 IQ levels. Nice if you're sick of all those online IQ tests where you always score 160...

Communigate Pro - Mail and Communications on OpenVMS

Communigate Pro is by far one of the best communications suite, and can easily replace even an Exchange / LCS / OCS suite (Unified Communications and all that). It can do clustering, VoIP, interface with Windows phones and has integrated WebMail, mailing lists, and so on.

The installation is pretty straight forward too. First, disable OpenVMS POP3 and IMAP services, and make sure nothing is running on port 8010 and 8100. Then unzip and proceed to install the POLYCENTER package.

Once the installation is over, start CommuniGate Pro services and login to the administrative interface withing 15 minutes. Enjoy.

WASD VMS Hypertext Services

Time to take a look at the "non-stop webserver", aka WASD VMS Hypertext Services.

To install this webserver, we're going to need the compiler suited we've previously installed (C and CXX-V products).

To install WASD, you need to download and unpack 2 images: HTROOT921.ZIP, the platform independent pack, and HTROOT921-AXP.ZIP (or VAX or IA64) - the platform specific files.

The installation process will largely go like this:

The INSTALL procedure will take a while to compile then link the package. If you do not have the OpenVMS SSL product (Compaq/HP) you'll require the OpenSSL toolkit.

Steve Wozniak - iWoz

Here's a great talk by Steve Wozniak (the guy that co-founded Apple with Steve Jobs). He's the guy that created Apple I and Apple II.

Eating your own dogfood

A quick look on netcraft reveals that Microsoft is running Windows 2008 / IIS 7 on their main webservers. I must say, they must have a great deal of confidence in the thing... microsoft.com is a *very* loaded website, and tends to be a big target for various attacks.

eComStation - a modern OS/2 Warp

eComStation is an operating system based on IBM's OS/2 Warp. They are soon about to launch the 2.0 version containing bootable JFS and SMP support. It also contains interesting open source software such as OpenOffice 2 and Firefox 2.

Overall, it is a very polished OS/2 with new features to bring it in the 21st century. They also have a server version of eComStation.

Just like OS/2, it seems to dislike VMware or VirtualBox, so it runs a bit better in Microsoft's VirtualPC (which seems to have been made for OS/2 in the first place).
